What Is a Polydioxanone (PDO) Thread?
Similar to Sculptra, these threads are placed to produce collagen. These threads are safe and can be used anywhere on the body. A PDO thread lift is a procedure that uses dissolvable sutures to revitalize and lift sagging skin. It’s a cheaper and faster alternative to facelift surgery, but the results don’t last as long and aren’t as dramatic. Recovery from the procedure is minimal and you can normally return to work the same day.
Polydioxanone (PDO) thread lifts use a biodegradable polyester suture to tighten and lift your skin. It’s a less invasive procedure than facelift surgery and can often be performed in under an hour without needing to go under a scalpel. PDO threads have been around and used in surgeries since the 1980s. The suture material breaks down in your body after about 6 months. The presence of these sutures in your skin triggers cells in your body called fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Collagen is the protein that gives your skin its structure and elasticity. Loss of collagen is one of the main causes of aging skin. New collagen created by PDO threads can last an average of 1-3 years.
There are 2 main types of PDO threads that we use at Magnolia Aesthetics:
PDO thread lifts have a much lower risk of complications than surgical facelifts, but when severe skin sagging is present PDO threads are not ideal and surgery should be considered. Some possible complications of PDO thread lifts include pain, bruising, infection, palpable or visible sutures under the skin in people with thin skin, nerve/blood vessel/salivary gland or duct injury.
The procedure entails cleaning your face with a surgical cleanser, injecting lidocaine for topical anesthesia, using a separate needle to create a small pilot hole, placing the threads using a cannula into the pilot hole, anchoring the thread while we pull out the cannula, and finally cutting the thread so it lies under the skin.
Recovery from a PDO thread lift is minimal. You may have some swelling, soreness, and bruising for the first few days, but you can return to your normal routine right away. You will want to avoid vigorous exercise, rubbing your face, sleeping on your side, or drinking from a straw for the first few weeks to prevent dislodgment of the threads.
